The Public Prosecutor prosecutes on behalf of the State, which is the community, under the Public Prosecutor Act 2006. By convention, he or she is responsible only to the Parliament for the efficient exercise of the functions of the office, but otherwise acts independently of the government and of any political influence. The Public Prosecutor also acts independently of inappropriate individual or sectional interests in the community and of inappropriate influence by the media.
